Moving across the country? Here are Some Long Distance Moving Tips

Here are some long distance moving tips if you plan on leaving Kamloops or are just moving here.
Moving from one city to another can be many things: exciting, unnerving, a look at something new, or going back to something old. One thing is for sure, to some extent or another: it’s a bit of a hassle. Over time, we tend to own more and more stuff, whether it’s furniture, clothes, electronics, souvenirs, you name it. A lot of these items are expensive and cheaper to move across country then buy, plus, we may simply really love them.

With 39 years of experience as movers in Kamloops, we have seen quite a few long-distance moves. So here are some tips that will come in handy, if you are about to undertake a trip with all of your belongings across the country.

5 Long Distance Moving Tips

First of all, you’ll need more time then for a regular move. Make sure you take care of all the loose ends in your city first, for example, cancel or transfer your cable, phone, internet, etc. at least 2-3 weeks in advance and return any hardware you may own, you won’t be able to just drive across town to do it later. Same goes for mailing addresses, books due at the library, clothes at the dry cleaners, etc.

Consider what you really need. This is true for any move, but think about how much more expensive a move across the country is with extra stuff to tag along, especially if it’s only to get rid of it at the destination. At the same time, compare how much it will cost you to move vs. buy the same items new, you may be surprised with the comparison and decide to keep your old furniture or appliances.

Decide how you will be moving and whether your car is coming with you. This has a lot of factors involved: how many people (and pets) are in your family. Of course, flying will be the fastest, but it might be more expensive if there are many of you and you need to ship your car. Consider driving to your new home. It may also be fun, so maybe it can be more than just a move!

Pack thoroughly and carefully, or even hire a company to pack your belongings. Long-distance moving exposes your items to more potential damage, so the more careful you are when you pack, the more likely things will arrive in one piece. If you hire a company, they are going to have experience and know the little tips and tricks. You’ll save time and in the long-run may end up saving money.

An extra tip: if you are moving for work, some of your expenses may be tax deductible, look into it beforehand, to make sure you keep the right receipts.
