Packing Tips for Your Next Move

Beat the stress of packing with these helpful tips. While the day that you actually pack up and go is important, you really begin the process by packing your belongings beforehand. While moving day is tiring, packing can be extremely tedious and very few people like to do it. It’s very important to ensure that all your belongings are packed well to avoid any damage during the move. To help out, our Kamloops movers wanted to offer some tips to help your move go as smoothly as possible.

4 Simple Packing Tips

Start early and go little by little

While it might seem like you don’t have much to pack, once you get going it will be more then you first thought. A good idea is to start early with non-essential items. For example, if you are moving in the summer you can get pack away all of your winter items. Or, if you know you won’t be entertaining in your home before the move, you can put your nice plates and silverware in boxes and just leave the things you will be using. Also, think twice when you grocery shop. The less food items, shampoos, detergents, etc. you need to pack, the better.

Have the right supplies

Make sure you are organized. Get boxes that are the same size, this will help when stacking everything. You’ll need things like: card board boxes, tape, scissors, newspapers, bubble wrap, markers, clear boxes, cleaning supplies, garbage bags, etc. Make a list so you only have to go supplies shopping once. This will save you time and money later, especially if you plan on finding free boxes.

Don’t rely on your memory

Label everything! You can number your boxes, write down what’s in them, colour-code the different rooms or item types – do whatever will help you remember where each box needs to go. You are unlikely to remember where you packed what on the moving day and won’t want to run after the movers to tell them where each box goes. It’s much easier to put “kitchen” or “bedroom 1” and this way they’ll know where to put that box down.

Be prepared for unpacking

The whole purpose of packing well is to protect your items, but also to make unpacking easier. So do everything you can when packing to be prepared. Wrap your fragile items well, know what goes where and get rid of the extra unwanted things – it’s easier to throw them out right away then to pack, unpack and then toss them. Also, make sure you have an overnight bag – you will probably be too tired after the move and won’t want to rummage through boxes for your toothbrush and pajamas.
