Ensuring that all of your items arrive at your destination in one piece is a critical part of moving. One of the most difficult things to pack is breakables like dishes and glassware. With the right equipment, care and effort, packing all those breakables so they arrive safe and sound is no problem.
Here are some tips you can use when packing these items up for your move.
Wrap and Tuck
The first thing you need to do is remember to wrap each item individually. If you wrap things together, they can move around and get scratched. Use moving paper made specifically to keep your glassware and dishes safe while moving.
For glasses, start by laying your glasses flat on the paper and tucking some into the open end of the glass. Next, wrap the paper around the glass forming a protective layer. End by tucking the excess into the open end of the glass to hold it still.
Use the same method for plates. Place the plate flat on the paper near the edge of it. Pull the paper up onto the top of the plate and roll the plate along the paper.
With both glasses and plates, the idea is not a nice neat, compact package. The goal is to get enough paper around it to make sure that it will not crack or break if it gets jostled around while moving.
Use the Proper Box Types
You will need to make sure that you have the proper boxes to place your wrapped items in. Dish barrels are a type of box that is best suited to moving dishes. They are made of very strong and shock absorbent cardboard that will keep your dishes safe. Dish barrels can be a bit more costly, but are the best way to ensure that your dishes arrive safe.
Assemble your Boxes Properly
When putting the boxes together, make sure to follow the instructions. This will ensure that the bottom of the box is able to properly support the weight you are putting into it. Make sure to use enough packing tape. This will prevent the box from breaking open while it is being carried.
Make a Bed at the Bottom
At the bottom of the box, add additional cushioning by putting some wadded up newspaper or bubble wrap. Start loading the box by placing the heaviest items on the bottom and the lightest items on the top.
Fill to the Top
Be sure to fill the box all the way to the top. You want to provide as little room for your dishes and glassware to move around as possible. Any gaps at the top will mean room for things to shift and vibrate, potentially causing damage.
These simple steps can ensure that your dishes and glasses will arrive safe and sound. Remember; contact us for all your Kamloops moving needs!
