Planning a Budget for Your Move

38970066_mMoving can get expensive. That is why it is important for you to plan out your moving budget ahead of time. Having a budget will let you know just how much you have to spend on all of the things that you need to get your move done properly. It can also help you to determine just what you can and can’t afford when it comes to moving services. Here are some things to consider when you are planning your moving budget.

Have a Backup Fund

The first thing you need to remember is to keep some money in reserve for emergency things. Your budget isn’t going to be fool proof. There are going to be things that you have forgotten to put on the budget or unforeseen things that crop up in the middle of your move.

Having some margin in your budget in the form of extra funds can help you considerably when those extra costs pop up unexpectedly.

Figure Out What You Can Afford

Your budget should start by you figuring out just what you have available for you move. This can often help you make decisions right at the beginning of your planning. If your funds are limited then you may need to have friends and family help you move instead of hiring a moving company.

Do Your Research

Once you have decided on a figure for your move, do your research. You may be surprised to find that the money you do have available will go further than you think.  Moving companies can be surprisingly affordable. Especially when you consider the amount of time and money you will spend on doing a move yourself. Don’t rule something out just because you make an assumption on the costs.

Have Some Money for Your First Month

Your first month in a new home may be more expensive than a typical month. This means things like security deposits for your home, first month’s rent in advance or deposits to get utilities activated. These costs can add up quickly and, if you are not planning for them, can really stretch your budget to the breaking point.

You may be able to ease some of these costs by using a security deposit refund you get from your previous home, but don’t count on the full amount. Landlords will often keep a large portion of the security deposit for a host of reasons.

Don’t Forget Transportation Costs

Gasoline costs an awful lot of money. It can also be easily forgotten in a budget. Remember to plan for the costs of fuel that you are going to consume with your personal cars, moving trucks, or any other vehicle that you may need to take with you on your move. You don’t want to find yourself without enough gas to make it to your new home.
